GO Northwest Recognized by National Foundation

goldman sachsGoldman Sachs recently announced 50 recipients of the Black Women Impact grants program, part of its One Million Black Women initiative, to fund Black women-led and Black women-serving nonprofits.

GO Northwest was one of 50 organizations selected from over 800 applicants judged on their established efforts to deliver innovative and transformative solutions to narrow opportunity gaps faced by Black women. GO Northwest will receive $150,000 for two years of general operating funding. “We know one of the best ways to create a more inclusive economy is to invest in Black women,” said David Solomon, Goldman Sachs Chairman and CEO.

“From our listening sessions, we’ve learned just how transformative Black women-led nonprofits have been for communities, and now we’re going to spotlight these organizations and give their leaders the resources they need to increase their impact.”Through a series of 50 listening sessions with over 20,000 Black women, a lack of access to unrestricted, multi-year funding was cited as a persistent challenge facing nonprofit leaders. The Black Women Impact grants program is designed to directly address this need.

“We are very excited and extremely honored to be among the very best organizations in the entire country recognized for their contribution to promoting the growth of Black women”, notes Mereida Goodman, Executive Director of GO Northwest. She adds, “As a community-based organization, we we know the impact our work has on Black women. This award will grow our capacity to reach Black women in our commmuties with greater education and resources for homebuying, home maintenance, and retention.”

• On the morning of November 7th, residents from 33 households in Hanlon, Garwyn Oaks and Howard Park came out on an unseasonably warm fall to participate in the latest Healthy Neighborhoods block project. While wearing masks and keeping safely distanced, neighbors smiled, told stories and laughed at each others’ jokes (and sometimes their own!) as they installed custom-made metal address signs in their front yards.  Read more here.

• Ernest and Debra Gayles had been renting a house in Hanlon for seven years when they felt the time was right to purchase the house and turn it into a real home. This house was an exceptional house, built almost a hundred years ago, and owned at one time by the Chief Judge of Baltimore City— truly a house with heritage! The problem was, the house had remained in the 1920s, needing a twenty-first century makeover, particularly in the kitchen.  The Gayles wondered, how to turn a grand, stately home into a modern one without losing the historical appeal?  To learn about the Gayle’s solution, visit here.
